Hi Henning,
The problen is solved. Robin Dunn from the wxPython group gave me the right 
hint. python2.3 requires the LC_NUMERIC part of the locale set to "C". So 
temporarily switching it from the german setting to C and then back leads to 
readable reports.
Why this hack isn't necessary in Debug mode remains on the dark side of the 
moon ...
