It sounds very, very familiar.   My next job after that involved
client reporting with the proper Kanji after making round trips
through Sybase, AS-400 and various pre-Unicode print driver systems
such as Printsoft's PReS - business refusing to drop the custom fonts,
IT refusing to keep them.  Fun times ;-)
