The Adobe Distiller has ALWAYS produced PDF files that are smaller than
any of its competition.  I've used pdf995 and PDFCreator extensively,
and although their results are good, the files are always bigger than
Distiller.

Are you using compression when you create your PDFs?  That makes a big
difference in size.
