Dirk, I sent you a version for checking, but got no reply so after some more 
testing put it in anyway. I don't think we yet handle unicode, but the utf8 
should be OK. In fact I think all the places where textobject usage is commented 
are actually optimisations  and one of them is now needed to handle the font stuff.
