Thanks very much for your help,

6 hours of headbashing, keyboard smashing, and examining reportlab source 
code has finally provided the reward. I now have professional purchase 
orders, some spanning 10 pages been produced.

reportlabs package is unbelievable and is worth the time and effort in 
getting it working.
