If they are just some kind of diff between 2 images,
we would not see much more.

But I have a partial answer:
the ellipse in test_platypus_general-p2.png
(and some others)
has its origin in the "Python powered" logo
(see the file test\pythonpowered.gif)

So there must be differences in the PDF layout
between 1.17 and 1.18.
Is it a simple shift? A change in margins or in scale?
