Hi Myles,

It's tough to be sure as but It sounds as if you filing system is in
need of some repair. When disk image mounts, or any external volumes
be it network or physically connected (USB or Firewire), they get
mapped to a directory on your main drive /Volumes.

This is UNIX directory is hidden from you in the Finder which is
normal. However it could be having some issues.

Best thing to do is boot with Mac OS X 10.5 DVD that your purchase or
came with computer and run Disk Utilities from that DVD. First run
Disk Repair. If it finds errors you should repair them and then run
it again until it says all is well.

Secondly reboot and run Disk Utility but this time from you hard
drive /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. You need to only do this
once. It will make sure main System directories have correct
permissions.

It important to do this in the order above as permissions ride on top
of disk and if the disk is corrupted fixing permissions will could be
rather useless (perhaps even cause more errors).

This is a good procedure and works most of the time.

If Disk Utility says it can't fix repair the disk in the first step it
means the filing system is corrupted to a more serious degree and it's
a good time to use a tool which will perform a very detailed recovery/
fix. Much more time consuming that Disk Utility. A great tool for
that situation is Alsofts Disk Warrior. I actually I run that utility
once or twice a year regardless as it optimizes the file system tables
and make the computer boot and run a bit faster. Sort of a filing
system tuneup.

Instructions....

Try Disk Utility
Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then
restart the computer while holding the C key.
When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk
Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must
select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer.
If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
Click the First Aid tab.
Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to
display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
Select your Mac OS X volume.
Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

Should I start up from a Mac OS X install disc to repair disk
permissions?
When possible, disk permissions should be repaired while started up
from a Mac OS X volume (hard disk) that contains updated Mac OS X
software, instead of a Mac OS X installation disc. Mac OS X software
updates may change permissions on some files to improve security. When
this occurs, the version of Disk Utility on the Mac OS X volume is
updated to account for the new permissions. Running Disk Utility while
started from the Mac OS X volume ensures that the changes made by
software updates are preserved.

Why this happens depends on many variables. But most common cause it a
sudden power outage when computer is not on a UPS. Highly recommend
even a small UPS on computer systems. Make sure if you have one or get
one you connect the USB signal cable to your Mac or else you only
delaying the sudden power loss. Signal cable tells the computer to
perform normal shutdown.
Prevention is always better than cure especially with hard drives. :-)

Hope this make sense and works for you.
