`sudo pip install scons` FWIW, and the recommendation is currently
`sudo apt-get install scons` for Ubuntu and Debian
`sudo yum install scons` for Fedora

and I believe some ports magic for FreeBSD.

For project larger with sources larger than 100Mb my recommendation is just
to stuff scons into project sources.
