To be honest I think so as well. However, there is always the

I think your analysis more or less covers the issues that stopped me
contemplating progressing things a while back.

Gradle now has a native code build system for C and C++ (and I want to
add D), so if you are in the "mostly Java but some C/C++" then Gradle
now has a solution.
