my bad, I misunderstood. I think it's quite a hard problem to get the bar labels
to behave well when the bars get small. There's not enough room.

I think this means bespoke labels. I know we can do this sort of thing, but it's
probably not in the base code. I'll take a look when I get some free time. I
think the procatical problem is that we assumed the labels only need access to
their own bar value so getting the sum needs some real trickery.
