Sorry, just saw this but it's too late to reply in
detail or to examine your patch.  You know more
about printing than I do.

Let me just say:  we think our code works, but we
don't think it's particularly clean !  Patches
and cleanup attempts are welcome as long as they
are relative to the latest CVS...so are test
cases...

The last released version was 1.5.2.  We are now 
"in transition" and have not decided the baseline for the
next major version, but it should be at least 2.1. However,
we have not had time to start making big changes.  I would
like to target 2.3, except for the problem that Jython is stuck 
on 2.1.
