The main reason we do not use Unicode strings is that until
very recently (September) we ran on Python 1.5.2, where they 
were not available.    One of my main goals for a proper 'version 2'
would be proper Unicode input, and auto-conversion to
the underlying fonts (or a warning if those fonts were
not available).  

However, I thought it ran cleanly with Unicode string
input.  What's failing?
