Thanks for the replies.
sapdb is not used much by SAP systems any more (despite its name).
In my case the underlying database is Oracle - which would be fine except the 
table structures are complex and I believe undocumented. Products like 
Accelio and Crystal Reports must use a higher level Business API (BAPI) I 
believe. These can be accessed in Java I understand so it's likely they can 
be also accessed using Python and hence ReportLab.
