Parashat Terumah: With this sedra, the thematic rhythm of the Torah becomes
decidedly less narrative and more legalistic. God tells Moses to instruct
the Israelites to bring gifts - precious metals, fine fabrics, skins, wood,
oil, spices, and jewels - for the building of the mishkan, the portable
sanctuary, and its furnishings. God says, "Let them make Me a sanctuary that
I may dwell among them." God then provides detailed instructions for the
ark and its cover, the table, and the menorah. Next, there are the
instructions for making the mishkan's coverings - layers of cloth, goats'
hair, and skins, from inside to outside. Next, the wooden structure of
planks and silver and gold fittings is described. The mishkan also was to
have a curtain to partition off the Holy of Holies and a screen for its
entrance. The altar of wood overlaid with bronze was to be placed outside
the screen. The entire mishkan was to be surrounded by an enclosure made of
linen curtains supported by wooden planks with bronze and silver fittings.
The reading can be found in Chumash Etz Hayim on page 485.

It is not too late to mark it on your calendar!! Please come with family
and friends to a night of environmental education this Sunday, February 10th
at
7:00 pm in the Grace Levine. We will be viewing "Kilowatt Ours," an award
winning film which demonstrates the connections between an average
homeowner's energy use and mountain top removal coal mining, global warming,
and nuclear power. A key aspect of the film is that it demonstrates
actions that homeowners can do to save money by saving energy and to reduce
their demand for unsustainable energy. Andrew Chalnick will also
speak about these environmental issues and the "cool cities" campaign that
he is organizing for Millburn. Please contact him directly at
Andrew at chalnick.net with any questions and to let him know that you will be
able to attend this important event.
Thank you in advance to Andrew for taking the time to share this meaningful
information with all of us!

If there is a God, Lior is definitely closer to God than anyone else I
know."
-- Yoni Liebling, Lior's brother
An engrossing, wrenching and tender documentary film, PRAYING WITH LIOR
introduces Lior Liebling, also called "the little rebbe." Lior has Down
Syndrome, and has spent his entire life praying with utter abandon. Is he a
"spiritual genius" as many around him say? Or simply the vessel that
contains everyone's unfulfilled wishes and expectations? Lior - whose name
means "my light" - lost his mother at age six, and her words and spirit
hover over the film. While everyone agrees Lior is closer to God, he's also
a burden, a best friend, an inspiration, and an embarrassment, depending on
which family member is speaking. As Lior approaches Bar Mitzvah, the Jewish
coming-of-age ceremony, different characters provide a window into life
spent "praying with Lior." The movie poses difficult questions such as what
is "disability" and who really talks to God? Told with intimacy and humor,
PRAYING WITH LIOR is a family story, a triumph story, a grief story, a
divinely-inspired story, a documentary about a young man with Down Syndrome
who is a charismatic prayer leader.
We are excited to announce that a block of tickets for the March 30
screening of PRAYING WITH LIOR at the West Orange JCC has been reserved for
us. Many thanks to Lori Schor for arranging these tickets and for
volunteering to coordinate the purchase and distribution of tickets. What a
wonderful way for B'nai Israel to demonstrate, as a community, that this is
a way of life we all support! To reserve your tickets, please contact Lori
Schor at 973-464-8484 or lorschor at aol.com. There are a limited number of
seats available.
SEE YOU AT THE MOVIES!
