PARASHAT VAERA God reminds Moses of the covenant God made with the
patriarchs, and says that the time has come for God to free the Israelites
from Egyptian bondage. Even so, Moses resists the charge God gives him to go
to Pharaoh, saying ?the Israelites would not listen to me; how then should
Pharaoh heed me?? Yet God instructs Moses and his brother Aaron, who is to
serve as his spokesman, to go to Pharaoh and deliver the Israelites from
Egypt. God also tells Moses that he will harden Pharaoh?s heart and that
Egypt will be punished severely before God finally brings the Israelites
out. Moses and Aaron come before Pharaoh, demonstrating the sign God had
given them. When Pharaoh?s magicians duplicate this sign, turning their own
rods into serpents, Pharaoh dismisses Moses and Aaron. Now the plagues begin
? blood, frogs, lice, and more. As each plague afflicts Egypt, Pharaoh
appears to relent, but once the plague has stopped, he reneges on his
promise to allow the Israelites to go. After the seventh plague of hail,
Pharaoh appears to be beaten. He says to Moses and Aaron, ?I stand guilty
this time. The Lord is in the right, and I and my people are in the wrong...
I will let you go; you need stay no longer.? But yet again, once the hail
stops, Pharaoh refuses to let the people go.

Rabbi Max Gruenewald Lecture
The Christian Jewish Relationship: A Perspective from James Carroll
Award winning novelist and writer for the Boston Globe.
Sunday, February 3 at 1:00 p.m.
There will be a roundtable discussion with participation from local clergy.
This event is open to the public. The author will be available afterwards
for book signing.
National Book Award?winner James Carroll confronts the long and dark history
of antisemitism in the Church in Constantine?s Sword: The Church and the
Jews (Houghton Mifflin; 2001). From the birth of Jesus to Constantine?s
vision of the Cross, from the Crusades to the Inquisition, from the Jewish
ghettos to the Dreyfus Affair, Carroll shows that the infamous silence of
Pope Pius XII during the Holocaust was not an aberration in Church history
but a culmination of nearly 2,000 years of entrenched anti-Judaism. This is
a serious work of historical research, but Carroll also uses his skills as a
novelist and memoirist to recount a past that provoked a crisis in his own
faith as a Catholic, and may do as much in any Christian who confronts it
honestly. The result is a tragic history laid bare and a demand that the
Church finally face this shameful past in full.
James Carroll was born in Chicago in 1943, and raised in Washington where
his father, an Air Force general, served as the Director of the Defense
Intelligence Agency. Carroll attended Georgetown University before entering
the seminary to train for the Catholic priesthood. He received BA
and MA degrees from St. Paul?s College, the Paulist Fathers? Seminary in
Washington, and was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in 1969.
Carroll served as Catholic Chaplain at Boston University from 1969 to 1974
and then left the priesthood to become a writer.

PARASHAT BO
We have come to the climax of the story of the Israelites in Egypt.
Pharaoh?s intransigence continues, and Egypt experiences the eighth and
ninth plagues ? locusts and darkness. God tells Moses that there is only one
more plague to come and then Pharaoh will finally let the people go. He
instructs Moses to tell the people to request objects of value from their
Egyptian neighbors.
Moses announces the final plague to Pharaoh ? the death of the firstborn ?
but once again Pharaoh doesn?t listen. God then tells Moses to instruct the
Israelites to prepare a lamb to be slaughtered and eaten with unleavened
bread and bitter herbs on the fifteenth of Nisan, the night on which God
will strike down all the Egyptian firstborn. Moreover, this date is to begin
a seven-day celebration in subsequent years. Moses speaks to the elders and
tells them to prepare for the first Passover, and so the people do.
The final horrible plague occurs and the firstborn of all Egyptians of all
strata of society are dead. Finally, Pharaoh summons Moses and Aaron and
tells them to take the Israelites and go immediately. After 430 years, the
Israelites leave Egypt.
God gives Moses and Aaron the laws of the Passover festival that is to be
observed in future years. He also gives them the laws of the redemption of
the firstborn.
The Baal HaTurim [Rabbi Jacob ben Asher] suggests that when Pharaoh says
?Take the men to worship your God,? his intention is males between the ages
of 20 and 60. Pharaoh refused to allow the women or those under 20 or over
60 to leave. ? Pharaoh understood something about the Jewish people. In
order for there to be a Jewish people, there has to be a past and there has
to be a future. The Jewish people are inherently committed to the concept of
?mesorah,? a concept of tradition that we get from our ancestors. This
concept is vital to what Judaism is all about. But we are also a religion
that believes that unless we have someone to give over this heritage to, we
have no future. (Rabbi Yissochar Frand, Ner Yisrael, Baltimore, Maryland)
Today?s Torah reading can be found on page 374 of Chumash Etz Hayim.

a serious work of historical research, but Carroll also uses his skills as a
novelist and memoirist to recount a past that provoked a crisis in his own
faith as a Catholic, and may do as much in any Christian who confronts it

It is not too late to mark it on your calendar!! Please come with family
and friends to a night of environmental education on February 10th at 7:00
pm. We will be viewing "Kilowatt Hours", an award winning film which
demonstrates the connections between an average homeowner's energy use and
mountain top removal coal mining, global warming, and nuclear power. A key
aspect of the film is that it demonstrates actions that homeowners can do to
save money by saving energy and to reduce their demand for unsustainable
energy. Andrew Chalnick will also speak about these environmental issues and
the "cool cities" campaign that he is organizing for Millburn. Please
contact him directly at Andrew at chalnick.net with any questions and to let
him know that you will be able to attend this important event. Thank you in
advance to Andrew for taking the time to share this meaningful information

Subject: [CBI] Poile Zedek Cemetery in New Brunswick / Restoration Fund
Message-ID: <0JUS0087ZR7TFBW9@vms044.mailsrvcs.net>
Barry P. Allen asks you to consider this request:
"We join with The Jewish Federations of New Jersey and many other synagogues
in expressing shock and sadness at the desecration and vandalism at the
Poile Zedek Cemetery in New Brunswick.
"Federation has teamed with Congregation Poile Zedek, Congregation Etz
Ahaim, Rabbis, cemetery officials and the organized Jewish community to
assess the damage and provide the support necessary to begin to heal and
rebuild. We have approached law enforcement officials, the Mayor of New
Brunswick, and the county prosecutor's office in an effort to maintain open
lines of communication. Federation, representing a united Jewish community,
is in pursuit of a full-scale, rigorous investigation into this heinous
crime, which is an affront to us all.
"As we examine all avenues of effectively providing aid and comfort to those
impacted and concentrate on putting together a formal plan of action, we are
confident that we can count on your support during this trying time for our
community. In that vein, we have established a fund for the repair and
restoration of the cemetery. Donations can be sent to the Jewish Federation
of Greater Middlesex County, earmarked "Cemetery Restoration Fund".
"100% of your donation will be directed toward this fund.
"Our address is 230 Old Bridge Turnpike, South River, NJ 08882. If you need
more information, contact us at 732-432-7711 or info at jf-gmc.org
. You may also donate on line by logging
onto our website at JewishMiddlesex.org. "

Parashat Beshalakh The Israelites leave Egypt and head into the wilderness.
God accompanies them as a pillar of cloud during the day and as a pillar of
fire at night. Being a slow learner, Pharaoh again changes his mind and
takes off after his former slaves with his warriors and 600 chariots. The
terrified Israelites find themselves trapped between the pursuing Egyptians
and the Sea of Reeds. God tells Moses to hold out his rod over the sea and
the sea splits. The Israelites cross on dry land and then, at God?s command,
the sea closes and the Egyptians drown. Moses leads the people in the great
song of praise and thanksgiving to God; Miriam leads the women. Just three
days later, the people begin complaining that the water they find at Marah
is too bitter to drink. God instructs Moses in how to make the water
potable. A month later, the people are complaining yet again, this time
about the lack of food. God responds with the miraculous manna and, for good
measure, with quails. Along with the instructions for gathering manna, the
Israelites are given the laws of Shabbat. Once again, the people find no
water. God tells Moses to strike a rock and water comes from it. The
Israelites are attacked by Amalek; with God?s help, they defeat their
attackers.

_________
If there is a God, Lior is definitely closer to God than anyone else I
know."
-- Yoni Liebling, Lior's brother
An engrossing, wrenching and tender documentary film, PRAYING WITH LIOR
introduces Lior Liebling, also called "the little rebbe." Lior has Down?s
Syndrome, and has spent his entire life praying with utter abandon. Is he a
"spiritual genius" as many around him say? Or simply the vessel that
contains everyone?s unfulfilled wishes and expectations? Lior ? whose name
means "my light" ? lost his mother at age six, and her words and spirit
hover over the film. While everyone agrees Lior is closer to God, he?s also
a burden, a best friend, an inspiration, and an embarrassment, depending on
which family member is speaking. As Lior approaches Bar Mitzvah, the Jewish
coming-of-age ceremony different characters provides a window into life
spent "praying with Lior." The movie poses difficult questions such as what
is "disability" and who really talks to God? Told with intimacy and humor,
PRAYING WITH LIOR is a family story, a triumph story, a grief story, a
divinely-inspired story.
We are excited to announce that a block of tickets for the March 30
screening of PRAYING WITH LIOR at the West Orange JCC has been reserved for
us. Many thanks to Lori Schor for arranging these tickets and for
volunteering to coordinate the purchase and distribution of tickets. What a
wonderful way for Bnai Israel to demonstrate, as a community, that this is a
way of life we all support! To reserve your tickets, please contact Lori
Schor at 973-464-8484 or lorschor at aol.com. There are a limited number of
seats available.

The minyan is facilitated by congregants Rabbi Helaine Ettinger and Joshua
Schor. It provides a comfortable and relaxed setting for those who wish to
experience an interactive service, learn some tunes and ask some burning
questions. Prayer will be in Hebrew (transliterations available) and English
and we hope for discussion and participation. Beginning and experienced
daveners are invited. The minyan meets on the first and fourth shabbatot of
the month.
Parashat Mishpatim is called Sefer HaBrit, the Book of the Covenant, for it
begins the presentation of the mitzvot, the particulars that define the
relationship between God and the Jewish people. In fact, Mishpatim contains
53 of the 613 mitzvot found in the Torah. Until this point, the Torah has
been a narrative; from here on, the Torah will present the laws by which the
Israelites are to live, with occasional narrative breaks.
The laws of Mishpatim deal with master and slave, capital offenses, personal
injury, negligence, theft, and property. There are also laws prohibiting the
mistreatment of the weak and powerless - strangers, widows, orphans, and the
poor. We also read about Shabbat, the Sabbatical year, and major festivals.
God again repeats the promise that the Israelites will inherit the land of
Canaan and warns against worshiping the gods of the Canaanite nations.
The covenant is ratified at a formal ceremony of acceptance. Moses and the
elders eat a meal and see a vision of God. Moses alone ascends the mountain
to receive the stone tablets, remaining there for forty days and nights.
Today's Torah reading can be found in Chumash Etz Hayim on page 456.
Mincha - 5:14 pm
Candlelighting time is 18 minutes before Mincha.

demonstrates the connections between an average homeowner's energy use and
mountain top removal coal mining, global warming, and nuclear power. A key
aspect of the film is that it demonstrates actions that homeowners can do to
save money by saving energy and to reduce their demand for unsustainable
energy. Andrew Chalnick will also speak about these environmental issues and
the "cool cities" campaign that he is organizing for Millburn. Please

_________
If there is a God, Lior is definitely closer to God than anyone else I
know."
-- Yoni Liebling, Lior's brother
An engrossing, wrenching and tender documentary film, PRAYING WITH LIOR
introduces Lior Liebling, also called "the little rebbe."
Lior has Down's Syndrome, and has spent his entire life praying with utter
abandon. Is he a "spiritual genius" as many around him say?
Or simply the vessel that contains everyone's unfulfilled wishes and
expectations? Lior - whose name means "my light" - lost his mother at age
six,
and her words and spirit hover over the film. While everyone agrees Lior is
closer to God, he's also a burden, a best friend, an inspiration, and an
embarrassment, depending on which family member is speaking. As Lior
approaches Bar Mitzvah, the Jewish coming-of-age ceremony, different
characters provide a window into life spent "praying with Lior." The movie
poses difficult questions such as what is "disability" and who really
talks to God? Told with intimacy and humor, PRAYING WITH LIOR is a family
story, a triumph story, a grief story, a divinely-inspired story,
a documentary about a young man with Down Syndrome who is a charismatic
prayer leader.
We are excited to announce that a block of tickets for the March 30
screening of PRAYING WITH LIOR at the
West Orange JCC has been reserved for us. Many thanks to Lori Schor for
arranging these tickets and
for volunteering to coordinate the purchase and distribution of tickets.
What a wonderful way for B'nai Israel to demonstrate, as a community, that
this is a way of life we all support! To reserve your tickets, please
contact
Lori Schor at 973-464-8484 or lorschor at aol.com. There are a limited number
of seats available.
SEE YOU AT THE MOVIES!

Parashat Terumah: With this sedra, the thematic rhythm of the Torah becomes
decidedly less narrative and more legalistic. God tells Moses to instruct
the Israelites to bring gifts - precious metals, fine fabrics, skins, wood,
oil, spices, and jewels - for the building of the mishkan, the portable
sanctuary, and its furnishings. God says, "Let them make Me a sanctuary that
I may dwell among them." God then provides detailed instructions for the
ark and its cover, the table, and the menorah. Next, there are the
instructions for making the mishkan's coverings - layers of cloth, goats'
hair, and skins, from inside to outside. Next, the wooden structure of
planks and silver and gold fittings is described. The mishkan also was to
have a curtain to partition off the Holy of Holies and a screen for its
entrance. The altar of wood overlaid with bronze was to be placed outside
the screen. The entire mishkan was to be surrounded by an enclosure made of
linen curtains supported by wooden planks with bronze and silver fittings.
The reading can be found in Chumash Etz Hayim on page 485.

It is not too late to mark it on your calendar!! Please come with family
and friends to a night of environmental education this Sunday, February 10th
at
7:00 pm in the Grace Levine. We will be viewing "Kilowatt Ours," an award
winning film which demonstrates the connections between an average
homeowner's energy use and mountain top removal coal mining, global warming,
and nuclear power. A key aspect of the film is that it demonstrates
actions that homeowners can do to save money by saving energy and to reduce
their demand for unsustainable energy. Andrew Chalnick will also
speak about these environmental issues and the "cool cities" campaign that
he is organizing for Millburn. Please contact him directly at
Andrew at chalnick.net with any questions and to let him know that you will be
able to attend this important event.
Thank you in advance to Andrew for taking the time to share this meaningful

_________
If there is a God, Lior is definitely closer to God than anyone else I
know."
-- Yoni Liebling, Lior's brother
An engrossing, wrenching and tender documentary film, PRAYING WITH LIOR
introduces Lior Liebling, also called "the little rebbe." Lior has Down
Syndrome, and has spent his entire life praying with utter abandon. Is he a
"spiritual genius" as many around him say? Or simply the vessel that
contains everyone's unfulfilled wishes and expectations? Lior - whose name
means "my light" - lost his mother at age six, and her words and spirit
hover over the film. While everyone agrees Lior is closer to God, he's also
a burden, a best friend, an inspiration, and an embarrassment, depending on
which family member is speaking. As Lior approaches Bar Mitzvah, the Jewish
coming-of-age ceremony, different characters provide a window into life
spent "praying with Lior." The movie poses difficult questions such as what
is "disability" and who really talks to God? Told with intimacy and humor,
PRAYING WITH LIOR is a family story, a triumph story, a grief story, a
divinely-inspired story, a documentary about a young man with Down Syndrome
who is a charismatic prayer leader.
We are excited to announce that a block of tickets for the March 30
screening of PRAYING WITH LIOR at the West Orange JCC has been reserved for
us. Many thanks to Lori Schor for arranging these tickets and for
volunteering to coordinate the purchase and distribution of tickets. What a
wonderful way for B'nai Israel to demonstrate, as a community, that this is
a way of life we all support! To reserve your tickets, please contact Lori
Schor at 973-464-8484 or lorschor at aol.com. There are a limited number of

Parashat Tetzaveh: Moses is told to instruct the Israelites to prepare olive
oil for lighting the ner tamid, the "eternal light" in the mishkan. God then
gives instructions for making the special vestments for Aaron, the kohen
gadol (high priest), and his sons, the regular "ordinary" priests. Aaron's
vestments would include the ephod (a long vest or apron), breastplate, robe,
sash, tunic, and a headdress with a golden plate inscribed "Holy to the
Lord." The ordinary priests were to wear tunics, sashes, and turbans. The
parashah continues with instructions for the seven-day ordination ceremony
for the priests. It concludes with instructions for making the altar for
burning incense in the mishkan.
"God appointed Aaron, and not Moses, to the office of high priest because
the work of bringing the people closer to God required a leader who would be
closer to the people than Moses was. As a result of the high moral level he
had attained, Moses was too far removed from the people, and just as it is
useless to engage a great Talmudic scholar to teach a small child who has
yet to learn the Hebrew alphabet, so Moses would not have made a good high
priest for the children of Israel." -Rabbi Joseph ben Wolf Kranz, known as
the Maggid of Dubno, 1740-1804, Poland.
Today's Torah reading can be found in Chumash Etz Hayim, page 503.

PARASHAT VA'YAKHEL: Moses assembles the entire Israelite community and
instructs them once again to observe Shabbat. He then asks them to bring
their gifts of materials for building the mishkan, the tabernacle, and for
those who have the necessary skills to come forward to perform the work.
When the artisans come together under the leadership of Bezalel and Oholiav,
they report to Moses that the people are bringing more materials than are
necessary. Moses issues a proclamation that no one should bring any more
gifts for the mishkan. (Obviously, B'nai Israel understood their Capital
Campaign not as a duty but as a privilege.) The Torah then describes the
making of the cloth walls, roof, planks, and bars of the mishkan, the
curtain for the Holy of Holies, and the screen for the entrance. Bezalel
makes the ark and its cover, the table, the menorah, the altars for incense

If there is a God, Lior is definitely closer to God than anyone else I
know."
-- Yoni Liebling, Lior's brother
An engrossing, wrenching and tender documentary film, PRAYING WITH LIOR,
introduces Lior Liebling, also called "the little rebbe." Lior has Down
Syndrome, and has spent his
entire life praying with utter abandon. Is he a "spiritual genius" as many
around him say? Or simply the vessel that contains everyone's unfulfilled
wishes and expectations? Lior - whose name
means "my light" - lost his mother at age six, and her words and spirit
hover over the film. While everyone agrees Lior is closer to God, he's also
a burden, a best friend, an inspiration, and an embarrassment, depending on
which family member is speaking. As Lior approaches Bar Mitzvah, the Jewish
coming-of-age ceremony, different characters provide a window into life
spent "praying with Lior." The movie poses difficult questions such as what
is "disability" and who really talks to God? Told with intimacy and humor,
PRAYING WITH LIOR is a family story,
a triumph story, a grief story, a divinely-inspired story, a documentary
about a young man with Down Syndrome who is a charismatic prayer leader.
We are excited to announce that a block of tickets for the March 30th
screening of PRAYING WITH LIOR at the West Orange JCC has been
reserved for us. Many thanks to Lori Schor for arranging these tickets and
for volunteering to coordinate the purchase and distribution of tickets.
What a wonderful way for B'nai Israel to demonstrate, as a community, that
this is a way of life we all support!

PARASHAT PEKUDEI: Moses instructs Aaron?s son Itamar to conduct an
accounting of the materials used for the building of the mishkan, the
portable yet holy Meeting Place between God and Moses. The making of the
priestly vestments is described. Once all of the work has been completed,
the mishkan and its furnishings are brought to Moses and he blesses the
people who made them. God instructs Moses to set up the mishkan, to anoint
it and its contents, and to consecrate Aaron and his sons. The cloud
representing God?s presence fills the mishkan, lifting up from it when it is
time for the Israelites to set out on their journeys.

When a Jew for Jesus approaches, how will your high school or college
student respond?
WILL S/he
- be moved by the friendly approach?
- attend a Shabbat service at a Messianic synagogue?
- agree with the missionaries' view on the Tanach?
- CONVERT TO CHRISTIANITY?
Join us for a very important informative session:
The Battle for the Jewish Soul: Are the Missionaries winning?
How to respond ?
Tuesday, March 11
7:00 pm
Guest Speaker: Rabbi Tovia Singer of Outreach Judaism
Outreach Judaism is an international organization that responds directly to
the issues raised by missionaries and cults, by exploring Judaism in
contradistinction to fundamentalist Christianity.
Our organization's goal is to generate a lasting connection between Jewish
families and Judaism through building immediate awareness of the current
Hebrew-Christian movement worldwide.

Parashat Vayikra: This portion, which opens the third book of the Torah,
often called Torat Kohanim, is a primer for the priesthood. The first
several portions (parashiot) deal with the laws of sacrifice and of ritual
purity, laws that for the most part have fallen out of practice today. The
book begins with the laws of the olah, the burnt offering. The olah was
offered in its entirety upon the altar, with no special benefit going to the
person who brought it. Offerings, which were to be brought from the herd or
the flock, had to be a male without blemish. Similarly, one could have
brought a bird (a turtledove or pigeon). Even grain could be offered as a
sacrifice; perhaps the idea behind this variety of offerings is that
sacrifices were not just for the rich; people of all financial levels had
access to the Temple service.
The second category of sacrifices is the shelamim, from the word shalem or
wholeness. This is usually translated "offering of well-being." Some parts
of the animal were offered up to God by the priests and other parts were
eaten. Blood and certain fats could not be eaten, however; sacrifice-based
laws still remain in effect today for foods that Jews do not eat.
The third category of offering is the hatat or sin offering. Various types
of offerings are available if a priest sinned, or the leader of a community,
a chieftain or an individual Jew had sinned. Various other sins and guilt
offerings are mentioned, in particular, the sin of a witness who withholds
information.

If there is a God, Lior is definitely closer to God than anyone else I
know."
-- Yoni Liebling, Lior's brother
An engrossing, wrenching and tender documentary film, PRAYING WITH LIOR,
introduces Lior Liebling, also called "the little rebbe." Lior has Down
Syndrome, and has spent his
entire life praying with utter abandon. Is he a "spiritual genius" as many
around him say? Or simply the vessel that contains everyone?s unfulfilled
wishes and expectations? Lior ? whose name
means "my light" ? lost his mother at age six, and her words and spirit
hover over the film. While everyone agrees Lior is closer to God, he?s also
a burden, a best friend, an inspiration, and an embarrassment, depending on
which family member is speaking. As Lior approaches Bar Mitzvah, the Jewish
coming-of-age ceremony, different characters provide a window into life
spent "praying with Lior." The movie poses difficult questions such as what
is "disability" and who really talks to God? Told with intimacy and humor,
PRAYING WITH LIOR is a family story,
a triumph story, a grief story, a divinely-inspired story, a documentary
about a young man with Down Syndrome who is a charismatic prayer leader.
We are excited to announce that a block of tickets for the March 30th
screening of PRAYING WITH LIOR at the West Orange JCC has been
reserved for us. Many thanks to Lori Schor for arranging these tickets and
for volunteering to coordinate the purchase and distribution of tickets.
What a wonderful way for B?nai Israel to demonstrate, as a community, that
this is a way of life we all support!
To reserve your tickets, please contact Lori Schor at 973-464-8484 or

News from USCJ's Israel Commission
& The Conservative Movement's
Israel 60th Anniversary Committee
A Message From Rabbi Paul Freedman
USCJ's Director for Israel Outreach
Last June, I met in Jerusalem with United Synagogue's president, Dr. Ray
Goldstein; its vice president for Israel, Dr. Saul Shapiro; its executive
director, Rabbi Jerome Epstein and Rabbi Jim Lebeau, the director of United
Synagogue's Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center. We decided to offer both delegations
from congregations and individual synagogue members a number of activities
and services when they visit Israel.
After many more meetings, we came up with the opportunities listed below. As
you can see, we have gotten the full participation of the
Masorti/Conservative organizations in Israel, and we are enormously proud of
that.
What do we ask of you?
First, please circulate this information as widely as you can, keeping in
mind that we can offer programs and suggestions to individual travelers as
well as to congregational missions.
Next, let us know if there is anyone you'd like me to reach out to
personally with information or an offer of support.
Here is a link to the website the Conservative movement has dedicated to
information about Israel's 60th birthday :
http://www.israelanniversary.org/index2.html. On that
website you can find a link to the document below ? it's here:

If you or anyone else has any questions, please get in touch with me, and
please be sure to let me know what you do in response to this material.
