The second of the “Five Books of Moses”, Parashat Sh’mot begins with a list
of the sons of Israel/Jacob who came to Egypt. At this point, the Torah
transitions from the story of a family to the story of a people. The
Egyptian king fears the descendants of Israel – the Israelites – and
enslaves them, forcing them to perform hard labor. When this fails to curb
the growth of the Israelite population, Pharaoh orders the midwives to kill
all the newborn boys. The midwives refuse, so Pharaoh issues a general order
that every baby boy born to Hebrew parents is to be drowned in the Nile.
Against this background, Moses is born. When his mother can no longer hide
her baby son, she places him in a basket in the river, hoping he might
survive. Moses is discovered by Pharaoh’s daughter who recognizes that he is
a Hebrew child but still decides to adopt him as her son and raise him in
the royal palace. Once Moses has grown up, he goes out to see the state of
his people. He comes upon an Egyptian beating a Hebrew slave and kills the
Egyptian. Once he discovers that his act is known, he flees to Midian. He
marries Zipporah, the daughter of Jethro, and becomes a shepherd of his
father-in-law’s flocks. One day, while tending the sheep, Moses comes upon a
burning bush. God speaks to Moses from the bush and tells him that he is
being sent to free the Israelites. Moses objects, insisting that he is
neither worthy nor capable of this mission. God counters Moses’ arguments,
reassures him, and gives him signs to show that he is God’s messenger. Moses
sets out for Egypt with his wife and sons. God sends Aaron to meet him and
together they assemble the Israelite elders and tell them that God has
promised to end their servitude. Moses and Aaron then go to Pharaoh and ask
that the Israelites be allowed to go into the wilderness to worship God.
Pharaoh not only refuses, but retaliates by increasing the severity of the
Israelites’ oppression. The people blame Moses and Aaron for their
punishment, but God tells Moses, “You shall soon see what I will do to
Pharaoh.”

Today’s Torah reading can be found on page 317 of Chumash Etz Hayim.

Adult Education Committee and the Rabbi Max Gruenwald Fund

presents

The Christian Jewish Relationship: A Perspective from James Carroll

Award winning novelist and writer for the Boston Globe.

Sunday, February 3 at 1:00 p.m.

There will be a roundtable discussion with participation from local clergy.

This event is open to the public. The author will be available afterwards
for book signing.

National Book Award–winner James Carroll confronts the long and dark history
of antisemitism in the Church in Constantine’s Sword: The Church and the
Jews (Houghton Mifflin; 2001). From the birth of Jesus to Constantine’s
vision of the Cross, from the Crusades to the Inquisition, from the Jewish
ghettos to the Dreyfus Affair, Carroll shows that the infamous silence of
Pope Pius XII during the Holocaust was not an aberration in Church history
but a culmination of nearly 2,000 years of entrenched anti-Judaism. This is
a serious work of historical research, but Carroll also uses his skills as a
novelist and memoirist to recount a past that provoked a crisis in his own
faith as a Catholic, and may do as much in any Christian who confronts it
honestly. The result is a tragic history laid bare and a demand that the
Church finally face this shameful past in full.

James Carroll was born in Chicago in 1943, and raised in Washington where
his father, an Air Force general, served as the Director of the Defense
Intelligence Agency. Carroll attended Georgetown University before entering
the seminary to train for the Catholic priesthood. He received BA

and MA degrees from St. Paul’s College, the Paulist Fathers’ Seminary in
Washington, and was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in 1969.

Carroll served as Catholic Chaplain at Boston University from 1969 to 1974
and then left the priesthood to become a writer.
